Sarasota, Florida is a city for all ages. The population of the city is about 52,000 while the county has roughly 350,000. This number increases dramatically during what we know as 'season', the time of year when northerners escape the cold winters and relax in the sunshine. Season runs between October/November through April. The average temperature in Sarasota is in the mid seventies. The sun shines an estimated 360 days a year. Although winter temperatures sometimes fall into the upper thirties and low forties, you won't find a snow shovel here! Florida relies on its tourists for revenue. Sarasota sits quietly on the Gulf of Mexico surrounded by its beautiful beaches, cultural district, and family activities. It's proximity to other areas of interest make it ideal for families. Sarasota is situated south of Tampa, west of Orlando and north of Ft. Myers and the Everglades, all of which are just a car trip away. You'll see license plates from all over the US and Canada. It's common for northerners to make the trip annually. Many own vacation homes, condominiums, and even mobile homes. Moreover, who can blame them? For our seasonal visitors January through March boasts such events as the Siesta Key Beach Snowbirds (yes, snowbirds!) Fine Art & Fine Crafts Show, the Sarasota County Fair, the Annual Circus Ring of Fame induction ceremony, and the Annual Sarasota Indian Festival. These are just a few of the many events that will keep you busy no matter how long you stay. Nevertheless, don't despair! There are festivals, events, shows, music and great shopping all year round in Sarasota. And don't think Sarasota is just for retirees! Spring break also brings throngs of young adults to lounge on its pristine beaches. You may think that the sidewalks in Sarasota roll up before dark, immediately following the blue plate special. You couldn't be more wrong. The small villages of Siesta Key and St. Armand's Circle offer great outdoor dining and nightlife for the young and the young at heart. The music of local musicians fills the air while you enjoy our coastal cuisine, colorful cocktails, and tropical breezes. So, as you can see, there is something for everyone in Sarasota. Come and be surprised. |
