What is Life Insurance?

Though hard to admit, there’s one claim everyone has in common - Death. We’d like to think we’re going to die at 100 years old, warm in our beds, while we’re sleeping. The harsh reality is many of us will go suddenly or unexpectedly and unprepared. This is where life insurance comes into play.

Why Do I Need Life Insurance?

Imagine what your significant other would have to go through if you were to pass unexpectedly. There would be a grieving process, funeral planning and expenses; bills would need to be paid, the kids’ education would need to be paid, etc. Life insurance allows you to leave behind funds for your family to allow sufficient time off work for a healthy grieving process, planning for your funeral, hiring help to take care of the kids, and paying bills such as the mortgage and car loans to keep from foreclosure and repossession.

How Much Life Insurance Do I Need?

When we asked Lee Ann what kinds of things to consider when contemplating the amount of life insurance a person needs, this is what she said:
  1. What will your funeral expenses be? The average funeral today costs between $20,000 and $25,000. Even cremation can cost more than $5,000.
  2. Calculate your debt: Mortgages, auto loans, credit cards, student loans, and any kind of loan can be left on your spouse’s plate when you’re gone. Without the funds to pay off the bills, your spouse risks foreclosure, repossession, and bankruptcy.
  3. How much of your income does your family depend on? How long will they depend on it? Think about things like groceries, clothes, school field trips and extracurricular activities, entertainment, etc. Without your income being replaced, your kids may have to live off food stamps, shop at Goodwill, and drop out of their extracurricular activities.
  4. How much do you want to leave behind for your children’s education? For 2011-2012, the average four year public in-state tuition including room and board is about $17,000 per year. The average four-year private tuition including room and board is $38,000 per year. This doesn’t include expenses for books, transportation, food, and extracurricular activities like being involved in a sorority or fraternity.
Your financial contribution to your family is probably something that you take for granted. Truth is you dramatically affect their quality of life. $50,000 of life insurance could be the difference between attending Harvard or Texas Tech. Both great schools, but let’s face it, if your kid works hard enough to be accepted to Harvard, doesn’t she deserve to get her education from there? Don’t skimp.
