| When you write a college admissions essay consider your reader and how they will receive what you have to say. In the following excerpt from a college admissions essay I wrote for a student, look at how it is organized. It is "framed" in the appropriate manner that suggests a linear timeline. In short, the student is talking about her life. "Having been raised in the “urban bubble” of Honolulu, I spent my childhood largely disconnected from Hawaii’s natural environment. Over the course of traveling to Moloka‘i numerous times as an undergraduate, I began to develop a very personal relationship with the land through learning how to hunt, fish, and cultivate crops. From this, I gained an appreciation for our limited natural resources and began to understand why rural communities so fervently defend their valuable ecosystems. My concern for the environment motivated me to seek the counsel of various professionals who helped me realize that with a law degree, I could effectively contribute to conservation efforts in Hawai‘i." The way this first paragraph is written, the reader learns a lot about the student. The reader learns where she is from and how she initially became interested in law, by her personal experience traveling. Notice the quotes around the phrase urban bubble. This emphasizes to the reader that she realizes that her life growing up in a city was limited. By writing this way, the reader who is a college admissions representative will know this young woman is very aware of herself and her limitations. She is mature and understands her situation in life. There is much you can do in your college admissions essay to make it stand out. Use this essay writing technique to "frame" your life experience in a way that will impress college admission representatives.
